Hero vs. Warrior: The Choice That Changes Everything
There’s a difference between a hero and a warrior. Most people never stop long enough to recognize it — let alone choose between the two.
Are You Chasing the Win — or Living the Moment?
For a long time, I didn’t.
The hero wants to win. They chase success, outcomes, and recognition. They look at the scoreboard, check the clock, and hope time speeds up so they can secure the victory. The focus is always out there — on what’s next, on what’s earned, on what others will see.
I’ve been that guy.
And if I’m being honest, it’s exhausting.
Because when you live like a hero, you’re never really in the moment. You’re always waiting for it to end so you can feel like you’ve made it.
The Warrior Lives in the Now
A warrior operates differently.
The warrior doesn’t care about the score.
The warrior doesn’t watch the clock.
The warrior doesn’t chase glory.
The warrior loves the battle.
They are fully engaged in the present moment — locked in on the rep in front of them, the person in front of them, the opportunity right now. They don’t need recognition because the work itself is enough.
That’s a different mindset. A stronger one.
And it’s a choice.
I Didn’t Always Know I Had a Choice
Looking back, I can see moments in my life where I was clearly a hero—and others where I stepped into being a warrior.
At the time, I didn’t realize I had any control over that. I thought mindset was something that just happened to you based on the situation.
Now I know better.
You can choose.
Every day, every rep, every conversation—you’re making a decision whether you realize it or not.
Scoreboard vs. Presence
You can choose to:
- Focus on numbers
- Check the scoreboard
- Seek validation
- Chase the outcome
Or you can choose to:
- Be fully present
- Engage with what’s in front of you
- Embrace the challenge
- Give everything you have until the end
One path creates pressure.
The other creates purpose.
A Lesson from the Field
Last summer, I was talking to my ADVNC 2031 travel team during a tournament. We had a real conversation about this exact idea — hero vs. warrior.
We talked about mindset, about pressure, about where focus goes when the game tightens up.
Then we landed on something simple:
A shirt with “NOW” on the front and “WON” on the back.
Same letters. Different order.
That stuck.
Because it’s true.
NOW Leads to WON
When you focus on the NOW, you give yourself the best chance to have WON.
Not because you chased it — but because you earned it through presence, effort, and consistency.
That’s the shift.
The hero wants the win.
The warrior becomes someone who wins — because of how they show up, not because of what they chase.
So, What Will You Choose?
This isn’t about sports. It’s about how you live.
In your work.
In your relationships.
With your kids.
With your team.
You have a choice.
Hero or warrior.
One chases the moment.
The other lives in it.
Choose wisely.
