The Skill That Separates Great Athletes: Attitude
There is one skill that separates athletes who consistently perform at their highest level from those who never quite reach it.
Talent Gets You There. Attitude Determines How Far You Go.
Attitude.
Not talent.
Not statistics.
Not speed, strength, size, or even experience.
The difference is how an athlete responds when things don’t go according to plan.
At VB Select Lacrosse, we call it the Honey Badger Mindset.
The Honey Badger isn’t an athlete who never struggles. Quite the opposite. The Honey Badger expects adversity and chooses to compete through it.
The Reactor vs. The Honey Badger
The Reactor focuses on never making mistakes.
The Honey Badger makes mistakes — and responds fast.
The Reactor focuses on always feeling calm.
The Honey Badger feels nervous — and competes anyway.
The Reactor focuses on always believing in themselves.
The Honey Badger hears doubt — and stays aggressive.
The Reactor focuses on being the best player on the field.
The Honey Badger stays engaged when things aren’t going their way.
The Reactor focuses on playing perfectly.
The Honey Badger competes through imperfection.
The Reactor focuses on never feeling pressure.
The Honey Badger feels the pressure — and refuses to shrink.
That distinction matters.
Because at the highest levels of athletics, mistakes are inevitable, pressure is unavoidable, and adversity is part of the game.
The goal isn’t to eliminate those things. The goal is to develop the mindset to handle them.
Great Athletes Don’t Avoid the Struggle
The best athletes aren’t necessarily the ones who make the fewest mistakes. They’re often the ones who recover from mistakes the fastest.
They don’t spend the next five minutes thinking about the turnover.
They don’t hang their heads after a missed shot.
They don’t disappear after losing a ground ball.
They don’t allow one bad play to become three.
They reset.
They respond.
They compete.
And then they move on to the next play.
The Honey Badger Mindset
For athletes trying to reach their highest level, the questions aren’t:
“Did I make a mistake?”
“Am I nervous?”
“Do I feel confident?”
“Am I playing my best today?”
The better questions are:
How fast can I reset?
How will I respond?
Will I keep competing anyway?
That’s the mindset we want to build at VB Select Lacrosse.
Because lacrosse — and life — will never be played perfectly.
You will make mistakes.
You will experience pressure.
You will doubt yourself.
You will have days when nothing seems to work.
That’s not failure. That’s competition.
The difference is what you do next.
Reset. Respond. Compete.
That’s the Honey Badger.
That’s the standard.
That’s how athletes — and people — get better.
